Mount Vernon River Days

River Days was a great experience. We started out Thursday night out at Meemaw's house making the fruit salad, cutting the angel food cake, and wrapping fudge. We had several very generous friends and family members donate fudge to our team. We are so very blessed to have the support that we have! We ended up with 7 1/2 buckets of fruit salad (104 6-ounce servings) and around 440 bundles of fudge!!

Friday we opened our booth at 9:00 a.m. and basically sat in the rain until around 4:00 p.m. From 5:00 p.m. until we closed around 9:00 p.m. the weather was great and the crowd seemed to just keep growing. We sold homemade (Meemaw's) fruit salad, homemade fudge, and soft drinks and we did well considering we were only able to sell food for about four hours.

Saturday we were open from 9:30 a.m. until about 9:00 p.m. It was a long day, but we had so much fun! The crowd was great - especially around dinner time, and for only selling dessert-type foods there were times on Saturday that we were waiting on people non-stop with one person getting drinks, one getting fudge, one pouring fruit salad, and one taking money. We were very blessed to have such a great turn-out at our booth! A family member went home and came back with no-bake cookies and they sold out within TEN minutes! She left and came back with a few more batches and they sold too! For Sunday, we had two family members make no-bakes and were surprised when another showed up with chocolate chip cookies! All of the cookies were great sellers and we are so thankful to have such wonderful friends and family helping us out.

The people in the booth beside us were absolutely wonderful! They are from Old North United Methodist Church in Evansville and have THE best catfish sandwich around! They will be at the Fall Festival so be sure to visit their booth and get a catfish sandwich, apple cider, or an apple cider slushy...they are incredible! Tell them Team Kelsey from River Days sent you! =)

Sunday there was a car show and we were at our booth from around 9:00 a.m. until we took everything down around 3:00 p.m. Overall it was a very fun and exciting weekend. The best parts were meeting new people, sharing Kelsey's story, educating people about the March of Dimes and prematurity, and experiencing such a fun weekend with family and close friends. We hope to be able to participate again next year!

We have to thank everyone who helped us out by donating either your time, your talents, or both. We would not have been as successful as we were without the donations of fudge, cookies, money, or time. We also want to thank:
  • Mike Ball at the March of Dimes for the banners, pamphlets, necklaces, and information.
  • The River Days Committee for their help.
  • Merle and Cathy Hamblin for all of the fudge...the dreamsicle that sold out on Friday evening and for having Lou make her peanut butter and chocolate fudge for us!
  • Karen Kuhn for the chocolate fudge and no-bake cookies.
  • Mary Mercer for the chocolate and peanut butter fudge.
  • Sheryl Thomas for the no-bake cookies.
  • Lisa White for the chocolate chip cookies.
  • Carroll Funkhouser for helping us set up our booth and tear it all down again on Sunday.
  • Meemaw for the use of her kitchen.
  • Keith Heriges for donating all of the ice for the weekend.
  • Old North United Methodist Church for being so nice and generous all weekend long.

Plus, as team captain I want to give a huge THANK YOU to the members of Team Kelsey that showed up and helped out. You guys are wonderful and made the weekend a blast! ...Laura, Janice, Marsha, Dottie, Missy, Sherry, Tim, Sarah, Lisa, and Sheryl - great job team and thank YOU!
